How we work

Our process in 4 steps

  1. No-obligation quote

Send us the document you want translated into Darija. You receive a competitive quote within 1 hour on working days. Short lines, one dedicated project manager who is there for you.

  2. Assigning a translator

One of our specialist Darija translators gets to work. For certified translations, a professional translator who issues a certified statement of accuracy; for business, technical, legal or medical texts, a specialist from that field.

  3. Translation, QA and revision

Once the experienced Darija translator has completed the text, a second specialist carries out a thorough quality check and revision.

  4. Delivery

You receive the Darija translation digitally by email, in the same layout as the original. Certified translations are also sent by registered post where a hard copy is required.

Certified or standard? How to choose the right Darija translation

  • Choose certified

When an authority requires an official, certified translation: the Home Office, courts, notaries, registrars or a foreign government. Escalated to notarisation or FCDO apostille where needed.

  • Choose standard

For business publication, websites, marketing and internal documentation. Faster and without certification, with the same specialist translator.

Not sure? Send your document and we will advise which form the receiving authority expects.

DIY or machine translation?

What non-native translators and machine translation miss in Darija

Many teams speak good Darija and AI tools translate in seconds. Yet in business, legal and medical Darija texts, non-native translators and machine translation make the kind of mistakes that cost you credibility or legal validity. A few examples we prevent:

  • Darija is not a written language

    Voorbeeld:

A client asks for 'Darija document translation', but the Moroccan certificate turns out to be drawn up in Modern Standard Arabic or French.

    Onze aanpak:

We clarify up front whether you mean spoken Darija (an interpreter) or written Arabic or French (a translation), and match the resource to that.

  • An MSA translator is not a Darija speaker

    Voorbeeld:

A Classical Arabic translator does not automatically understand spoken Darija, and the reverse holds too; the distance is considerable.

    Onze aanpak:

For spoken work we choose specifically Moroccan Arabic linguists who command the modern urban vernacular.

  • Code-switching with French and Spanish

    Voorbeeld:

Many Darija speakers switch mid-sentence into French, and in the north into Spanish.

    Onze aanpak:

We deploy interpreters who follow the living vernacular, not only textbook Arabic.

  • Arabizi source text

    Voorbeeld:

Online, Darija is often written in Latin script with numerals (3 for ع, 7 for ح), and a source text can arrive in that form.

    Onze aanpak:

We recognise and interpret Arabizi correctly and agree up front in which script the delivery should be made.

Wereldwijde dekking

Waar Darija wordt gesproken

Darija is neither a uniform language nor a written one in official contexts. An intake conversation with a speaker from Tangier sounds different from one with a speaker from Marrakech, and what arrives labelled as a 'Moroccan document' is, on closer reading, often Modern Standard Arabic or French. We match the resource to your situation: an interpreter for the spoken language, or an Arabic translator for the written document, and we confirm that choice up front in the quote.

Is Darija the same as Arabic?
Darija is Moroccan Arabic (ISO 639-3 ary): the spoken vernacular of Morocco within the Maghrebi Arabic dialect continuum. It diverges sharply from Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) and is not readily mutually intelligible with it. An MSA translator does not automatically command Darija, which is why we deploy specifically Moroccan Arabic linguists for spoken work.
Can Ecrivus translate a written document in Darija?
Darija is rarely written formally. Official Moroccan documents are usually drawn up in Modern Standard Arabic or French. We first review your document: if it is a written certificate, we translate from Arabic or French; if it is spoken communication, we deploy a Darija interpreter.
Does the UK have sworn translators, and how do you certify a translation of a Moroccan document?
The UK has no sworn-translator institute, so there is no "sworn translator" as a legal office here. For official acceptance we provide certified translation: a signed and dated statement of accuracy from the translator or the agency, with our contact details. Where a body asks for more, this can be escalated to notarisation by a solicitor or notary public, or to an apostille or legalisation through the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO). Because Moroccan documents are usually in MSA or French, the certified translation generally covers those written languages rather than Darija itself. We confirm the level your receiving authority requires in the quote.
Do I need an apostille for my Moroccan certificate?
Often, yes. Morocco is a party to the Hague Apostille Convention (1961), so a Moroccan certificate carrying an apostille can be recognised internationally. For documents issued in the UK, legalisation runs through the FCDO; see [Get a document legalised](https://www.gov.uk/get-document-legalised). We advise per document type and confirm the approach up front in the quote.
How quickly will I receive a quote for a Darija interpreter or translation?
On working days you receive a reply within 1 hour. The lead time for a translation, or the availability of an interpreter, depends on region, dialect, document type and any required certification, and is confirmed in the quote. For tight deadlines we confirm a workable rush schedule up front rather than promising a fixed turnaround.
Which professional bodies do you work with for Darija and Arabic translation?
We work with native specialist linguists and reference the recognised UK professional bodies — the ITI (Institute of Translation and Interpreting), the CIOL (Chartered Institute of Linguists) and, for interpreting, the NRPSI (National Register of Public Service Interpreters). These are bodies of reference for the profession; we name them so you can see the standard the work is held to.
Why choose a Darija translation agency instead of finding an interpreter or translator yourself?
A Darija translation agency takes the coordination off your hands. We help you decide whether you need an interpreter (spoken Darija) or a translation (written Arabic or French), select a linguist who commands the right regional variant and register, and arrange certification where a UK authority requires it. You keep one point of contact for scheduling, dialect, terminology and delivery, all under a single quote. A skilled freelance interpreter or translator does excellent work too; the difference an agency adds is bringing those moving parts together so you are not managing them separately.
