How we work

Our process in 4 steps

  1. No-obligation quote

Send us the document you want translated into Greek. You receive a competitive quote within 1 hour on working days. Short lines, one dedicated project manager who is there for you.

  2. Assigning a translator

One of our specialist Greek translators gets to work. For certified translations, a professional translator who issues a certified statement of accuracy; for business, technical, legal or medical texts, a specialist from that field.

  3. Translation, QA and revision

Once the experienced Greek translator has completed the text, a second specialist carries out a thorough quality check and revision.

  4. Delivery

You receive the Greek translation digitally by email, in the same layout as the original. Certified translations are also sent by registered post where a hard copy is required.

Certified or standard? How to choose the right Greek translation

  • Choose certified

When an authority requires an official, certified translation: the Home Office, courts, notaries, registrars or a foreign government. Escalated to notarisation or FCDO apostille where needed.

  • Choose standard

For business publication, websites, marketing and internal documentation. Faster and without certification, with the same specialist translator.

Not sure? Send your document and we will advise which form the receiving authority expects.

What non-native translators and machine translation miss in Greek

Many teams speak good Greek and AI tools translate in seconds. Yet in business, legal and medical Greek texts, non-native translators and machine translation make the kind of mistakes that cost you credibility or legal validity. A few examples we prevent:

  • Transliteration of names

    Voorbeeld:

The Greek name Γεώργιος can be romanised as Georgios, Yeoryios or Georgos — a discrepancy causes identity confusion at a register office or with the Home Office.

    Onze aanpak:

We apply ELOT 743 (identical to ISO 843) as standard, but for passport and civil-registration purposes we follow the spelling shown in the Greek identity document.

  • Dimotiki versus Katharevousa

    Voorbeeld:

A translator who only reads modern Demotic will misread a 1960s certificate written in Katharevousa — the case endings and word forms differ in substance.

    Onze aanpak:

We confirm up front which register applies and assign a specialist who reads both registers.

  • Cypriot versus Standard Greek

    Voorbeeld:

Cypriot legal vocabulary differs from that of Greece; a Standard Greek term does not always fit a Cypriot procedure.

    Onze aanpak:

Per project we confirm whether the document is intended for the Greek or the Cypriot context and choose the matching vocabulary.

  • False maritime equivalence

    Voorbeeld:

Terms in a Greek charterparty or P&I file carry fixed meanings in maritime English that a general translator can miss.

    Onze aanpak:

We assign a translator with shipping experience and confirm the terminology up front with you and your insurer.

Wereldwijde dekking

Waar Greek wordt gesproken

Greek is not a single market. A shipping file for a Greek owner calls for different terminology than a certificate for a Cypriot court, and a document predating 1976 can carry Katharevousa features that read as archaic to a modern reader. We match the variant, terminology and register to the context in which your document will be read, and confirm that choice up front in the quote.

What is the difference between Modern Greek (Dimotiki) and Katharevousa?
Since 1976 Dimotiki (Demotic Greek) has been the only official standard. Katharevousa was the formal government and legal register until 1976. Documents predating 1976 — older deeds, pre-1980 articles of association, classical texts — can carry Katharevousa features and call for a specialist who reads both registers. We confirm up front which register applies before the work begins.
Does the UK have sworn translators, and how do you certify a Greek translation?
The UK has no sworn-translator institute, so there is no "sworn translator" as a legal office here. For official acceptance we provide certified translation: a signed and dated statement of accuracy from the translator or the agency, with our contact details. Where a body asks for more, this can be escalated to notarisation by a solicitor or notary public, or to an apostille or legalisation through the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO). Greece is an EU member and a party to the Hague Convention, so for use outside the EU an apostille is usually required. We confirm in the quote which level your receiving authority needs.
How does Ecrivus handle transliteration of the Greek alphabet into the Latin script?
We apply the ELOT 743 transliteration (the Greek state standard, identical to ISO 843) as standard for names, addresses and official terms. For travel documents and passport names we follow the spelling shown in the Greek identity document, which can differ where the holder has chosen their own romanisation. For UK civil-registration purposes we likewise follow the identity document to avoid identity confusion.
Does Ecrivus translate shipping files such as charterparties and P&I correspondence from Greek?
Yes. Our Greek specialist translators handle bills of lading, charterparties, MOAs, P&I correspondence and IMO and MARPOL files. For the insurance context we align with the standard maritime English terminology alongside the Greek and confirm the terms with you up front. Greek shipowners control the largest merchant fleet in the world, so this is a frequent request for UK insurers, brokers and law firms.
Does Ecrivus translate EU funding and EU procedural documents into Greek?
Yes. We translate applications, progress reports and final reports for Horizon Europe, the ERDF and ESF+, among others. Greek has been one of the 24 official EU languages since Greece joined in 1981; we follow the IATE terminology and the Interinstitutional Style Guide so that your documents match the conventions reviewers expect.
How quickly will I receive a quote, and what about the lead time?
On working days you receive a quote within 1 hour. The lead time for the translation itself depends on document type, volume, language pair and any required certification, and is confirmed in the quote. For tight deadlines we confirm a workable rush schedule up front rather than promising a fixed turnaround.
How does Ecrivus verify the quality of a Greek translation?
We combine native specialist translators with a structured QA layer: a terminology list, a style guide and a second review where the legal field, risk profile or volume requires it. CAT tools (Trados, memoQ, Phrase TMS) keep terminology consistent across volume and repeated content, and a translation memory keeps follow-up work aligned and lowers the cost over time.
Why choose a Greek translation agency instead of finding a freelance translator yourself?
A Greek translation agency takes the coordination off your hands. We select the specialist who fits your document and sector — whether that is shipping, law or an EU procedure — arrange certification, notarisation or legalisation where an authority requires it, and have the work checked by a second reviewer. You keep one point of contact for variant, terminology, transliteration, scheduling and delivery, all under a single quote. A skilled freelance translator does excellent work too; the difference an agency adds is bringing those moving parts together so you are not managing them separately.
