What non-native translators and machine translation miss in Ossetian

Many teams speak good Ossetian and AI tools translate in seconds. Yet in business, legal and medical Ossetian texts, non-native translators and machine translation make the kind of mistakes that cost you credibility or legal validity. A few examples we prevent:

  • Not a Slavic or Caucasian language

    Voorbeeld:

Because of the Cyrillic script and its place in the Caucasus, Ossetian is quickly confused with Russian or with the Caucasian languages.

    Onze aanpak:

We treat Ossetian as the Eastern Iranian language it is, with a translator who works in it as such rather than reading it as Russian.

  • Iron and Digor mixed up

    Voorbeeld:

Iron and Digor differ markedly; handling a Digor document in Iron reads wrong to the intended reader.

    Onze aanpak:

Per project we match the dialect to the client's background and the source document.

  • The letter Ӕ/ӕ dropped or mis-encoded

    Voorbeeld:

The extra letter Ӕ/ӕ is essential; dropping it or encoding it wrongly produces errors in proper names and legal texts.

    Onze aanpak:

We hold to the correct encoding of Ӕ/ӕ in proper names and official documents during translation and review.

  • A hidden second source language

    Voorbeeld:

Many speakers use Russian (North Ossetia) or Georgian (South Ossetia) as a second language, so source documents can be mixed-language.

    Onze aanpak:

We verify the actual source language of your document up front and assign the translator accordingly.

Wereldwijde dekking

Waar Ossetian wordt gesproken

Ossetian is spoken mainly in the Caucasus, with the largest body of speakers in North Ossetia-Alania within the Russian Federation. There are further speakers in South Ossetia, in Georgia and in a historical diaspora across Turkey and Western Europe. Source documents are often multilingual: many speakers use Russian in North Ossetia and Georgian in South Ossetia as a second language. We therefore verify up front what the actual source language of your document is and which dialect suits your background, and we record that choice in the quote.

Does Ecrivus work as an Ossetian translation agency with certified translations?
Yes. Ossetian is a rare language in the UK translation market, so the right linguist takes some finding — an Ossetian translation agency takes that off your hands. For official acceptance we provide certified translation: a signed and dated statement of accuracy from the translator or the agency. Where a receiving body asks for more, this can be escalated to notarisation by a solicitor or notary public, or to an apostille or legalisation through the FCDO. This typically applies to Home Office immigration cases, diploma recognition, certificates and court files. We assess per document type which level your authority requires.
Which dialect of Ossetian does Ecrivus use?
By default we use the Iron dialect, the basis for the Ossetian standard language and the usual choice for official documents. For texts from the western Digor region we select a translator who works in the Digor dialect. We match the dialect per project to your background and the source document, and confirm that choice in the quote.
Is Ossetian the same as Russian or a Caucasian language?
No. Ossetian is an Eastern Iranian language within the Indo-European family, descended from the speech of the Alans and Scythians. It does use a Cyrillic script with the extra letter Ӕ/ӕ and is spoken in the Caucasus, but it is neither a Slavic nor a Caucasian language. We therefore assign a translator who works in Ossetian as such.
My document is partly Russian or Georgian — can Ecrivus handle that?
Yes. Many Ossetian speakers use Russian (North Ossetia) or Georgian (South Ossetia) as a second language, so source documents can be mixed-language. We verify the actual source language of your document up front and can handle the Russian or Georgian parts too, so the whole file is translated consistently.
How quickly will I receive a quote for an Ossetian translation?
On working days you receive a reply to your request within 1 hour. The lead time for the translation itself depends on document type, volume, dialect and any required certification, and is confirmed in the quote rather than promised as a fixed turnaround.
Why choose an Ossetian translation agency instead of finding a translator yourself?
Ossetian is a rare language, so finding the right translator takes time. An Ossetian translation agency takes that search and coordination off your hands: we select the specialist who fits your dialect and document type, verify the source language, arrange certification, notarisation or legalisation where an authority requires it, and have the work checked by a second reviewer. You keep one point of contact for dialect, terminology, scheduling and delivery, all under a single quote. A skilled freelance translator does excellent work too; what an agency adds is bringing those moving parts together so you are not managing them separately.
