Our process in 4 steps

  2. Assigning a translator

One of our specialist Tzotzil translators gets to work. For certified translations, a professional translator who issues a certified statement of accuracy; for business, technical, legal or medical texts, a specialist from that field.

  3. Translation, QA and revision

Once the experienced Tzotzil translator has completed the text, a second specialist carries out a thorough quality check and revision.

  4. Delivery

You receive the Tzotzil translation digitally by email, in the same layout as the original. Certified translations are also sent by registered post where a hard copy is required.

What non-native translators and machine translation miss in Tzotzil

Many teams speak good Tzotzil and AI tools translate in seconds. Yet in business, legal and medical Tzotzil texts, non-native translators and machine translation make the kind of mistakes that cost you credibility or legal validity. A few examples we prevent:

  • Tzotzil is not Spanish

    Voorbeeld:

Source documents from Chiapas are often issued in Spanish even though the person concerned speaks Tzotzil. Tzotzil is a Maya language in its own right, not a dialect of Spanish.

    Onze aanpak:

We verify in advance which language is actually needed and use Spanish only as a bridging language where that is correct.

  • Confusion with Tzeltal

    Voorbeeld:

Tzotzil is easily confused with its closely related sister language Tzeltal or with other Maya languages of Chiapas.

    Onze aanpak:

We confirm the exact language and variety in advance, based on the municipality of origin.

  • Variety and municipality

    Voorbeeld:

Chamula, Zinacantán and Chenalhó differ in vocabulary and spelling; a text in the wrong variety reads as out of place to the reader.

    Onze aanpak:

We ask about the municipality of origin and match vocabulary and spelling to it.

  • Non-standardised spelling

    Voorbeeld:

The older SIL orthography differs from more recent INALI conventions, which can lead to inconsistency within a single file.

    Onze aanpak:

We agree a consistency approach for spelling and terminology per assignment and hold to it across all documents.

Wereldwijde dekking

Waar Tzotzil wordt gesproken

Tzotzil lives almost entirely in the highlands of Chiapas, in municipalities such as San Juan Chamula, Zinacantán and Chenalhó. Those municipalities differ from one another in vocabulary and spelling, and the orthography is not fully standardised. We therefore ask up front about the municipality of origin and match spelling and terminology choices to it, so the text fits both the speaker and the receiving authority.

What is Tzotzil and which region does it come from?
Tzotzil is a Maya language of the Tzeltal-Tzotzil branch with roughly 400,000 to 550,000 speakers, mainly in the highlands of Chiapas, Mexico, around San Cristóbal de las Casas. It is a language in its own right, not a dialect of Spanish. Speakers themselves call their language Bats'i k'op, meaning 'true language'.
Does Ecrivus provide certified Tzotzil translations?
Tzotzil specialists are scarce. For official procedures our Tzotzil translation agency combines expert translators with Spanish as a bridging language where needed, and matches the certification to the receiving authority. The United Kingdom has no sworn-translator institute, so for official acceptance we provide certified translation — a signed statement of accuracy — which can be escalated to notarisation by a solicitor or notary public, or to an apostille or legalisation through the FCDO. We assess per document type which form is required.
My document from Chiapas is in Spanish — do I still need a Tzotzil translator?
Often not for the document itself. Source documents from Chiapas are usually issued in Spanish, even when the person concerned speaks Tzotzil. We verify in advance whether you need Tzotzil for an interview or statement, and Spanish for the written documents, and choose the right approach on that basis.
Which variety of Tzotzil does Ecrivus deliver?
Tzotzil differs by municipality: Chamula, Zinacantán and Chenalhó each have their own vocabulary and spelling choices. We ask about the municipality of origin and match variety, spelling and terminology to it. Where the origin is unknown, we usually take the Chamula variety as the starting point.
How quickly will I receive a quote for a Tzotzil translation?
On working days you receive a reply within 1 hour. The lead time for the translation itself depends on document type, volume, variety and any required certification, and is confirmed in the quote rather than promised as a fixed turnaround.
Why choose a Tzotzil translation agency instead of finding a translator yourself?
A Tzotzil translation agency takes the coordination off your hands, which matters all the more with a scarce Maya language. We find a translator who knows the right variety and region, arrange Spanish as a bridging language where needed, and match the certification to the receiving authority. You keep a single point of contact for language choice, variety, scheduling and delivery. A skilled freelance translator does excellent work too; what an agency adds is bringing those moving parts together so you are not managing them separately.
