What non-native translators and machine translation miss in Manx

Many teams speak good Manx and AI tools translate in seconds. Yet in business, legal and medical Manx texts, non-native translators and machine translation make the kind of mistakes that cost you credibility or legal validity. A few examples we prevent:

  • Manx is not English

    Voorbeeld:

The English- and Welsh-influenced spelling of Manx leads some tools and readers to assume it is a form of English.

    Onze aanpak:

We treat Manx as a Goidelic Celtic language, related to Irish and Scottish Gaelic, and assign a specialist who commands the language.

  • Misleading language detection

    Voorbeeld:

Its unusual orthography among the Celtic languages regularly confuses automated language detection and machine translation.

    Onze aanpak:

We do not rely on automated detection or machine translation; a human specialist establishes the source language and variant.

  • Wrongly called 'extinct'

    Voorbeeld:

Manx is often labelled a 'dead' or 'extinct' language, while a new generation of L1 children is growing up through the Bunscoill Ghaelgagh.

    Onze aanpak:

We frame Manx as a revived minority language and match a modern or historical register to your purpose.

  • Limited tool coverage

    Voorbeeld:

Machine translation and CAT tools are barely available for Manx, and specialist translators are scarce.

    Onze aanpak:

We confirm scope and lead time per project and plan the work realistically rather than promising a standard turnaround.

Wereldwijde dekking

Waar Manx wordt gesproken

Manx belongs to the Isle of Man, with a small but committed diaspora in the United Kingdom, Ireland and North America. Transmission from native speakers was interrupted in the twentieth century, but the language has come back through a well-documented revival, including the Bunscoill Ghaelgagh, the Manx-medium primary school in St John's. We match terminology and register to the heritage, education or government context of your document and confirm that choice up front in the quote.

Is Manx a dialect of English?
No. Manx (Manx Gaelic) is a Goidelic Celtic language of the Isle of Man, closely related to Irish and Scottish Gaelic. Its spelling was based on an English- and Welsh-oriented system in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, but the language itself is not a form of English. As a Manx translation agency we always treat Manx as an independent Celtic language, never as English.
Isn't Manx extinct?
Manx is often labelled extinct, but that is not the case. After transmission from native speakers was interrupted in the twentieth century, the language went through a documented revival. Through the Bunscoill Ghaelgagh, the Manx-medium primary school in St John's, a generation of L1 children is once again growing up with the language. We approach Manx as a revived minority language.
Does Ecrivus provide official or certified Manx translations?
Yes — where a receiving authority requires an official translation, we arrange it. The UK has no sworn-translator institute, so for official acceptance we provide certified translation: a signed statement of accuracy, escalated to notarisation by a solicitor or notary public, or to an apostille or legalisation through the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO). Certified work involving Manx is rare; most demand is heritage, cultural, genealogical and educational material. Where a body does ask for certification, we confirm the exact requirements per case.
How quickly will I receive a quote for a Manx translation?
On working days you receive a reply to your request within 1 hour. Because machine translation and CAT coverage for Manx are limited and specialist translators are scarce, we confirm the workable lead time per assignment in the quote, based on document type, volume and variant. We confirm a realistic schedule up front rather than promising a fixed turnaround.
Which variants of Manx does Ecrivus work with?
We coordinate modern revival Manx and historical (classical) Manx, and take account of the regional Northern Manx and Southern Manx variants where it matters. For a contemporary education or government text we choose modern Manx; for heritage sources we follow the historical spelling. We confirm the variant you need up front in the quote.
Why choose a Manx translation agency instead of finding a translator yourself?
A Manx translation agency takes the coordination off your hands, which matters especially for a language where specialist translators are scarce. We select a specialist who commands Manx Gaelic and knows the heritage context of the Isle of Man, arrange certification where an authority requires it, and have the work checked by a second reviewer where the nature or importance of the text calls for it. You keep one point of contact for variant, terminology, scheduling and delivery, all under a single quote. A skilled freelance translator does fine work too; what an agency adds is bringing those moving parts together for you.
