Certified or standard? How to choose the right Montenegrin translation

  • Choose certified

What non-native translators and machine translation miss in Montenegrin

Many teams speak good Montenegrin and AI tools translate in seconds. Yet in business, legal and medical Montenegrin texts, non-native translators and machine translation make the kind of mistakes that cost you credibility or legal validity. A few examples we prevent:

  • Treating Montenegrin as Serbian

    Voorbeeld:

Translating a Montenegrin document into the Serbian standard by default, on the assumption that the languages are close enough to be interchangeable.

    Onze aanpak:

We use the Montenegrin standard (CANU) where it is required and confirm per project which variant suits the receiving authority.

  • Choosing the wrong script

    Voorbeeld:

Supplying a formal government document in Latin script where the authority expects Cyrillic, or the other way round.

    Onze aanpak:

Per project we confirm up front whether the document should be in Latin or Cyrillic script, matched to the target body.

  • Certification missing or unnecessary

    Voorbeeld:

Submitting a standard translation where a UK authority requires a certified version, or paying for certification where it is not needed.

    Onze aanpak:

We assess per document type whether certified translation — and any notarisation or apostille — is required, and confirm it in the quote.

  • Overlooking the apostille

    Voorbeeld:

Presenting a Montenegrin certificate without the legalisation required for use between Montenegro and the United Kingdom.

    Onze aanpak:

We flag the apostille route (Hague Convention 1961; Montenegro is a contracting party) and set it up per project.

Wereldwijde dekking

Waar Montenegrin wordt gesproken

Montenegrin is a young standard language within a familiar language area. Since Montenegro's independence in 2006 and the 2007 Constitution, it has been officially distinct from Serbian, yet it remains part of the BCMS continuum. For your document that means two things matter: the choice between Latin and Cyrillic script, and terminology that follows the Montenegrin standard rather than the Serbian one. We confirm that choice up front in the quote.

What is the difference between Montenegrin, Serbian, Croatian and Bosnian?
Montenegrin, Serbian, Croatian and Bosnian together form the BCMS continuum (formerly Serbo-Croatian). Linguistically they are closely related and highly mutually intelligible; politically and culturally they count as separate standard languages. Montenegrin received its own ISO 639-3 code, cnr, in 2017 and uses both Latin and Cyrillic script, with Latin dominant. We translate each variant according to the official standard of the country concerned.
Does the UK have sworn translators, and how do you certify a Montenegrin translation?
The UK has no sworn-translator institute, so there is no "sworn translator" as a legal office here. For official acceptance we provide certified translation: a signed and dated statement of accuracy from the translator or the agency, with our contact details. Where a body asks for more, this can be escalated to notarisation by a solicitor or notary public, or to an apostille or legalisation through the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO). We confirm in the quote which level your receiving authority requires.
Do I need an apostille for my Montenegrin document?
Often, yes. For use between Montenegro and the United Kingdom an apostille is usually required under the Hague Convention of 1961. Montenegro has been a contracting party since 2007, so the apostille replaces heavier consular legalisation. We flag the correct route and set it up per project; for outbound UK documents the apostille is issued by the FCDO ([get a document legalised](https://www.gov.uk/get-document-legalised)).
In which script does Ecrivus deliver the Montenegrin translation?
By default we deliver in Latin script, which is dominant in Montenegro for business and tourism documents. Cyrillic is equally official and we use it for formal government documents or at the request of the receiving authority. We confirm the script choice in the quote and hold to a single script across the document.
How quickly will I receive a quote for a Montenegrin translation?
On working days you receive a reply within 1 hour, with an indication of price and lead time. The final lead time depends on document type, volume, script choice and any required certification, and is confirmed in the quote. For tight deadlines we confirm a workable rush schedule up front rather than promising a fixed turnaround.
What if I need a legal document translated into Montenegrin?
For legal Montenegrin translation — contracts, judgments, powers of attorney, notarial deeds — we pair you with a translator who has a legal background and match terminology to the relevant standard within the BCMS area. We provide certified translation where an authority requires a signed statement of accuracy. See [legal translation](/en/services/legal-translation/) for our approach to certification and terminology.
Why choose a Montenegrin translation agency instead of finding a freelance translator yourself?
A Montenegrin translation agency takes the coordination off your hands. We select the specialist who fits your document and the BCMS language area, make the right script choice, arrange certification, notarisation or legalisation where an authority requires it, and flag the apostille route. You keep one point of contact for script, terminology, scheduling and delivery, all under a single quote. A skilled freelance translator does excellent work too; the difference an agency adds is bringing those moving parts together so you are not managing them separately.
