Many translators working into and out of English are listed with bodies such as the NRPSI or hold membership of the CIOL or ITI. Courts, the Home Office, universities and registrars usually ask for one when you submit diplomas, certificates and official documents. A standard translation has no such formal status and is intended for business texts, websites and internal documents. Which form you need depends on the authority requesting the document.

An Apostille is required when an official document, such as a certified translation, needs to be recognised in another country that has signed the Hague Apostille Convention 1961. For countries that have not signed the convention, consular legalisation applies via the relevant ministry and embassy. Which route applies to your document depends on the country of destination and the authority requesting it.
